What makes this recipe so great?
This recipe is a healthy and dairy free twist on your favorite classic creamy coleslaw but there are a couple things that make it the best coleslaw ever!
- Apples - the addition of apples in this recipe is like a match made in heaven. Adding julienne apples to the cabbage gives this coleslaw a sweet taste and crunchy texture that is truly irresistible.
- Quick and Easy - This dish comes together in ten minutes and after chilling in the fridge, is ready to complete your summer grilling meal!
- Fresh and Delicious - This coleslaw is full of fresh and delicious ingredients making it a perfect addition to your Summer BBQ or weeknight dinner. Just pair it with your favorite grilled protein!
What is coleslaw?
Coleslaw, also known as New England Salad, is a dish traditionally made up of shredded cabbage (and sometimes other veggies) with a mayonnaise or vinaigrette based dressing.
Ingredients Needed
- Coleslaw Mix - Using store-bought bagged coleslaw mix is what makes this recipe so quick and easy! Though you’re more than welcome to chop your own cabbage or swap it out for broccoli slaw!
- Apples - Use your favorite kind! Granny smith apples would be delicious and more tart, where as gala and fuji apples add a bit more sweetness to the dish!
- Mayonnaise - Make sure it’s Whole30 compliant! Here are a couple of my favorite whole30 mayonnaise brands: Tessemae’s, Primal Kitchen, Sir Kensington’s.
- Dijon Mustard - Adds a bit of tang and slightest spice to this recipe.
- Apple Cider Vinegar - The acid in the ACV makes this coleslaw a bit more tangy and delicious.
- Coconut Aminos - This gives the dressing so much flavor and a hint of sweetness.
- Red Onion - Red onions add a pop of color, crunch, and very mild spice to this coleslaw.
- Salt & Pepper
How To Make This Recipe
- Add the bagged coleslaw mix, apples, and red onions to a large bowl.
- In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the mayo and all remaining dressing ingredients until smooth.
- Pour the dressing over the coleslaw and mix until well coated and combined.
- Chill the coleslaw for an hour or two before serving.
Is coleslaw Whole30 compliant?
This recipe is! Traditional coleslaw dressing often contains non compliant oils such as canola and soybean oil as well as sugars. This recipe uses Whole30 compliant mayonnaise brands and natural whole foods sweeteners, like apples and coconut aminos to sweeten the dish.
Is mayonnaise Whole30?
Certain brands of mayonnaise are definitely allowed on Whole30! Traditionally, mayonnaise is made with ingredients such as non Whole30 compliant oils (like canola and soybean oil) and sugars. Whole30 compliant mayonnaise uses healthier, compliant oils such as Avocado Oil, and omits any sugars.
Some of my favorite Whole30 Mayonnaise Brands are Tessemae’s, Primal Kitchen, and Sir Kensington’s. Making your own Whole30 compliant mayonnaise is always an option as well!
Time Saving Tips
- I highly recommend using store bought coleslaw mix in this recipe to keep it quick and easy though you can make your own coleslaw mix at home by slicing red and/or green cabbage into thin shreds. You can also add shredded carrots!
- This coleslaw recipe is best after being refrigerated for a couple hours so it can be made ahead of time. If making this recipe the day before, simply wait until an hour or two before serving to mix the coleslaw mix with the dressing.
Coleslaw FAQ’s
Most often mayonnaise is not vegan friendly due to the eggs it contains. By choosing or making a vegan mayonnaise, this recipe can definitely be made vegan friendly!
This Coleslaw with apples recipe goes with ANYTHING! Serve it alongside grilled meats at a summer BBQ, with crockpot pulled pork, or with a chicken apple sausage for a quick, healthy weeknight meal.
Here are some other great recipes to serve with the coleslaw:
Pan Seared Pork Chops
Instant Pot Carnitas
Smoked Jerk Chicken
This coleslaw is best stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days. The cabbage and apples do get softer the longer it sits, but still delicious!
